Amazing Women & Mothers

Today is International Woman's Day http://www.internationalwomensday.com/ and Sunday is Mother's Day in Ireland and a lot of European Countries. I chose to post this photo of my parents on their Wedding Day in July 1958. My Dad's parents are next to my Mum and vice versa.

These three women were inspirational and I was so lucky to have both Grannies in my life though sadly my Dad's mum died when I was just 4. My Dad's mother ran her own business. My Mum's mother was Manager of a hotel and my Mum worked in Donegal Carpets. Both my grannies were earning when most mothers were full time housewives. It also is a tribute to the three Dads as they were ahead of their time too in rural Ireland by being supportive of their wives working outside the home.

Love is...Building a snowman together

For this young girl and this young man
Have happiness without an end
Because they have made so good a friend.
From the poem Baile and Aillinn by WB Yeats

From the archives as in 13 winters that I have spent down here in Waterford there was snow one day!

Happy Valentine's Day to all

In Remembrance

Six years ago today my dad died suddenly from a heart attack aged 79. This is a scanned photo of him and my daughter Aisling in 1992 when she was 4 and he was 65. Aisling hung out with my Dad every day from aged 3 when we moved back to Donegal and lived near my parents. Dad retired in his early 50s for health reasons and as grandchildren came along both he and my mother took on the roles of being their minders so we parents could continue in our careers.

My Dad was a very skilled man. He was a qualified plumber, electrician, carpenter and shipwright. Carpentry was his first love. He also taught. But most of all he was a wonderful father and granddad who always had time for his 4 children and six grandchildren. And he was also a wonderful husband who is missed very much still by my mother.

High Speed Broadband

Taken yesterday from upstairs. We are finally going to get competition in the high speed broadband market in our area. We will be one of the first places in this part of Ireland outside of Dublin. Of course it rained most of the day on them so they are back this morning finishing off the work. Eircom (the telecommunications company) said that they hope to roll out the new service including TV by the end of the year. We will be out of contract from the one and only high speed provider by then so we will finally have a choice.
