mcdonegal1 > Knights Hospitallers Fortified Church built in early 1300s in Templetown, Co Wexford, Ireland. Templetown got its name from the Knights Templars which were granted the lands in 1172 by King Henry II. In 1307 the lands were given to their rivals the Knights Hospitallers who build this fortified church.

mcdonegal1 > Rathfarnham Abbey Now known as Loreto Abbey, Rathfarnham Abbey was built in 1725 for William Palliser, a decendant of a Yorkshire family, who settled in Wexford during the 17th century. In 1821 the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. Daniel Murray bought it for £2,000 (about €2,300) to set up a school. In 1822, after significant renovation, Sr. Teresa (Frances Ball) and her fellow sisters moved into the establishment. Sr. Teresa became known as Mother Teresa since she was the head of the order. She renamed the place Loreto, in honour of the Holy House in Nazareth, Loreto, Italy. Mother Teresa began a building programme and this was continued on by her successors. Probably the most famous connection with the building is that Mother Teresa of Calcutta entered religon at Loreto Abbey in 1928 at the age of 18.

mcdonegal1 > Holy Cross Abbey, Thurles, Tipperary, Ireland Originally the site of a Celtic monastery or hermitage, Holy Cross Abbey was established in 1169 as a Cistercian Abbey. The abbey building itself was shaped in a square, and included the church, sacristy, kitchen, refectory and chapter house. the last Cistercian to reside at Holy Cross was Father Edmund Cormack, who died in 1735. With the death of Fr Edmond Cormack in 1735, the Cistercian link was broken. People began to bury their dead within the Abbey about 1740. Restoration began in 1971.
