Holy Cross Abbey, Thurles, Tipperary, Ireland
Originally the site of a Celtic monastery or hermitage, Holy Cross Abbey was established in 1169 as a Cistercian Abbey.
The abbey building itself was shaped in a square, and included the church, sacristy, kitchen, refectory and chapter house.
the last Cistercian to reside at Holy Cross was Father Edmund Cormack, who died in 1735.
With the death of Fr Edmond Cormack in 1735, the Cistercian link was broken. People began to bury their dead within the Abbey about 1740.
Restoration began in 1971. A celebration of the restoration was held in October 1975.
