mcdonegal1 > Back in Time

This is the inside of a traditional Donegal Thatched Cottage from 1700. They consist of 3 rooms known as the lower room, the upper room and the kitchen. This was taken in the kitchen looking down to the lower room.

I love how my Nikon D80 works. No flash used.

mcdonegal1 > Farm House

This is the house on the farm featured in yesterday's posting. It was built in the 1820s. It is possible to have light lunch there and of course we did.

mcdonegal1 > Ancient.

This is the George's Street Tower which is part of the old town walls in Wexford Town dating back to the early 1200s.

Thanks to everyone who commented, viewed and gave a thumbs up to my posting for yesterday keeping it in 1st place most of the day. Both of us are very appreciative.

mcdonegal1 > Westgate Tower Wexford Town Ireland

King Henry the second ordered the fortification of the town during his visit in 1172. This is the only remaining medieval gateway into this historic fortified town.

Attached four-bay two- and three-storey split-level malthouse, c.1825 This street was traditionally the centre of the corn trade in Wexford throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with malted corn transported by ship to the Guinness breweries in Dublin. For more on the building visit http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=WX&regno=15503060

mcdonegal1 > Light

The Collegiate Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, Youghal, County Cork. The church is presumed to have been a monastic settlement of Saint Declan of Ardmore (c450). Rebuilt in the Hiberno-Romanesque style (c750) the Great Nave was erected in the year 1220. This is a side altar. The building is now a National Monument of Ireland. For more information and history see http://www.youghal.cork.anglican.org/

Taken hand held no flash so I am quite please how it turned out.
mcdonegal1 > Time

Had a very long work day yesterday so apologies for not commenting. Will catch up at various times today.

This is Youghal's Clock Tower Gate. In 1777, the town's Clock Gate was built on the site of Trinity Castle, part of the town's fortifications. The Clock Gate served the town as gaol and public gallows until 1837; prisoners were executed by being hanged from the windows. http://www.heritagetowns.com/

mcdonegal1 > Dolmain Chnoc an Bhrúnaigh

Officially known as the Kernanstown Cromlech, it is also spelled as Browneshill Dolmen– is a granite portal tomb dating to circa 3,000BC and consists of the largest capstone in Europe, reputed to weight up to 150 tonnes. Originally the tomb would have been set in a mound with the burial located under the capstone.

Day 174: Aug 13, 2010
mcdonegal1 > Strokestown House Dining Room

You might have noticed the the wallpaper is a different shade around the edges of the picture and mirror frames. this is because the original owners had to sell off their larger paintings when money got tight!

While on the tour of the house one of the children commented that all the furniture was on the small size. It is but people were much smaller back in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Day 172: Aug 11, 2010
mcdonegal1 > Lady's Bedroom

The lady of the house always slept here. The carpet is faded from a couple of hundred years of light streaming through the windows. The table at the bed was for reading and came complete with built in candle holder. Only the land owning rich could afford such a luxurious bedroom and the space to have his and her bedrooms.

Flash photography not allowed.

Day 171: Aug 10, 2010
mcdonegal1 > Strokestown House

This house was built in the 1860s. The wings were designed to make the house look impressive. In fact they are false fronts. The one on the right as you look at it was the stables and the left one was servant quarters and stores. The deception theme was continued within the house. A few more photos will follow over the next couple of days where I was allowed to photograph though without a flash. For mored details on the history of the house see
http://www.strokestownpark.ie/house.html

Wishing you all a great week. I am back at work this afternoon. As you can see from the sky the weather was not the best while I was on holidays.

Day 171: Aug 9, 2010
mcdonegal1 > Long Time

Tynan's pub was built in 1702 in Kilkenny City, Ireland.

The man and woman were from Texas and Minnesota!

Day 118: June 19, 2010
mcdonegal1 > Old and New

Taken very early Sunday morning as it is on the corner of a very busy junction where traffic is always passing.

The old building is Reginald's Tower. It is a circular tower, part of Waterford City's defences, built in the beginning of the 13th century, with a second phase in the 15th century. It was also used as a mint, prison and military store. It has been restored and now houses an exhibition. For more information http://www.waterfordcity.ie/city/walls/reginald.htm

I know which building I prefer.

Day 101: June 2, 2010
