mcdonegal1 > Huntington Castle - 1625

Huntington Castle, Clonegal, County Carlow, the ancient seat of the Esmonde family is today one of Irelands historical treasures.
Presently lived in by four generations of the Durdin-Robertson family, descendents of the Esmondes, the castle is set in picturesque countryside at the foot of the Blackstairs mountains.
Built in 1625 on the site of a former 14th century stronghold and abbey. http://www.huntingtoncastle.com/

This is where we were hanging out yesterday instead of being on Smugmug :)

mcdonegal1 > Passing the GPO

In August 1814, construction of a purpose-built headquarters began. The building was completed in January 1818, at a cost of £50,000.

The building was designed by Francis Johnston, an architect with the Board of Works, in Greek revival style. The main section was made with Wicklow granite and the portico, the roof structure over the entrance, of Portland stone. The statues on the roof, by sculptor John Smyth, are of Hibernia, a classical representation in female form of the island of Ireland, with Fidelity to one side and Mercury (the messenger of the gods) to the other.

During the 1916 Rising, the GPO was one of three Dublin landmarks—the Four Courts and the Custom House being the others—to be destroyed in the fighting. The GPO was rebuilt and reopened in 1929. http://www.anpost.ie/AnPost/History+and+Heritage/History/GPO+Dublin/ or http://goireland.about.com/od/dublincityandcounty/gr/gpodublin.htm

mcdonegal1 > Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland

Taken in October.

Trinity was founded just before the Tudor monarchy had completed the task of extending its authority over the whole of Ireland. The idea of an Irish university had been in the air for some time, and in 1592 a small group of Dublin citizens obtained a charter from Queen Elizabeth incorporating Trinity College juxta Dublin. The Corporation of Dublin granted to the new foundation the lands and dilapidated buildings of the monastery of All Hallows, lying about a quarter of a mile south-east of the city walls. Two years later a few Fellows and students began to work in the new College, which then consisted of one small square. During the next fifty years the community increased. Endowments, including considerable landed estates, were secured, new fellowships were founded, the books which formed the beginning of the great library were acquired, a curriculum was devised and statutes were framed. mcdonegal1 > Marlay House

The history of the Estate can be traced back to the Anglo-Norman conquest and right through to Tudor Times when Henry VIII confiscated the lands then owned by St. Mary's Abbey, during the suppression of the monasteries. Towards the end of the 17th century, Thomas Taylor acquired the property. He built a house on the Estate, which was called “The Grange” More information http://www.dlrcoco.ie/Parks/Marlayhsehistory.pdf

mcdonegal1 > Kilkenny Castle

Took this yesterday.

Kilkenny Castle has been an important site since Strongbow constructed the first castle, probably a wooden structure, in the 12th century. William the Earl Marshall built the first stone castle on the site, which was completed in 1213. This was a square-shaped castle with towers at each corner; three of these original four towers survive to this day. http://www.kilkenny.ie/eng/about_kilkenny/history/famous_landmarks/kilkenny_castle.html

mcdonegal1 > Early Christian Monastery

This is what they looked like in Ireland around 1,500 years ago. The church and burial ground was higher than the area where the monks lived and the pilgrims stayed.

Last for now in the series from our Sunday trip to the Irish National Heritage Park. http://www.inhp.com/

Today is my work day so hope to catch up on comments tonight. Tomorrow is filled with hospital appointments from 8am therefore I will not be commenting or posting on Thursday.

mcdonegal1 > New Stone Age Farmstead

Phill and I visited the Irish National Heritage Park yesterday morning. Replica of an Irish farm house from around 6,000 years ago. We managed half the tour which for Phill was a great achievement. We got free passes for another visit as some of the buildings are being renovated and we could not get inside them (like this one). We will definitely go back and finish the tour. Will be positing a few more during the week.

Wishing everyone a great week. Thanks for all the views, comments and thumbs up during the past week. I really appreciate them all. This is a fantastic community. It is so inspiring and educational.

mcdonegal1 > Altmont House

Had the pleasure of visiting here about 10 days ago. The exact date of the building of the house is not known but this version is believed to date from around 1740. The gardens are known as the most romantic in Ireland! There is no entrance fee as the owner bequeath the entire 100acres to the state on condition that no one was ever charged to view her gardens. Speaking to a local lady on our visit she said that when the owner was alive she encouraged people to come and stroll in her gardens. it is very much worth the trip.

More information available at http://www.altamontgarden.com/Web%20Pages/information.htm

Wishing you all a great week.
